The Cavalry

This page lists all the belongings that I own/ed and have named. I don’t know how it started, and I don’t believe it’s weird to name your things. When you have an attachment to them and you use them, sometimes it feels like they’re a pet.

Fin – my laptop. He’s a Toshiba Satellite A300 and I got him in April 2009. The model is discontinued. I love Fin to bits. Maybe I dislike the fact that he’s shiny and does have quite a few battle scars on the lid, but he’s mine and I’m quite proud that he is still in good internal condition after almost two years. His name is derived from the song by Anberlin of the same name.

Max – my guitar. He’s a simple Valencia acoustic, and he’s rather on the stylish side. He’s supposed to be a classical but I replaced his strings with acoustic ones as I didn’t have any others. I got my friends to autograph and write messages on him in 2008 when I graduated from high school. He’s decorated with sequins. Max is genderless; I just refer to Max as “he”.

Kepler – named after scientist Johannes Kepler, he’s my new PC. James helped me buy all the components and put him together. With a 24 inch LED screen and running on i3 (just enough for me, seriously) with Windows 7 64-bit… he’s gorgeous. He was my replacement for The Machine (see below). He’s really just my general computer now, and I got him because I had been using Fin for years, and I needed a larger screen, not to mention a proper desktop computer. I use him for designing, blogging, surfing the internet, chatting, etc.

Kevin – my iPad 2, which I got in early 2012, named after the wonderful Kevin Mitchell. He wears a nice blue silicon case. I purchased an iPad in like new condition on eBay because I needed it for reading, lecture notes, and I just liked the portability of such a device. Oh, and to listen to music on, since I was living off only eight gigabytes on my iPod nano.

Roranicus – a Samsung Galaxy Ace. I love this guy, Rory for short. ;) Obviously I named him after the Doctor Who character, haha. James’s dad bought this phone for me from Hong Kong and I love it to bits. It has so many features, and completely suits my needs. I like that it has a lot of what the iPhone has, even though they both have their pros and cons.

Shadow – a Canon 1000D. Thank you to my best friend Lilian for helping me name him something that wasn’t from Doctor Who or some other thing I’m fanatic about. The name reminds me of one of my photography projects called Music in Shadows. This DSLR is the camera I use for most of my photography. I take it to shows, special occasions and use it daily.

Ben – my iPhone 3GS, named after musician Ben Jorgensen. I got him in January 2010 and sadly, lost him in February 2011 in a department store, without the black case I had used for so long. Footage of the thief was found, but the thief was never identified.

Rose – a Sony Ericsson T715a. Yes, she’s pink. This was my replacement phone, which my dad gave to me after I lost my iPhone. Pre-loved, I guess. :) She’s named after the character Rose in the science fiction television show Doctor Who. I’d like to think of her as the defender of the earth. :D

Claire – my film SLR, a Canon EOS 300. I bought it for just $80 for my photography classes. I only have one zoom lens but that’s honestly all I need. You don’t need fancy equipment to be a good photographer – or a photographer, for that matter. I named this one Claire after the person I bought it from. I really love this camera and feel like it’s just so strong, valuable and wonderful.

Miso – Black iPod nano (3rd generation). It belonged to my brother but after I gave him my iPod touch, he let me use this while I was still sorting out my devices. Miso is named after miso soup.

Jayne – my external hard drive. She can hold a terabyte of data, and is unfortunately not a plug-and-play. That’s okay though, I don’t need to take her around, so I don’t mind the extra cable.

Laika – my record player. I don’t recall when my dad gave her to me, but it was probably before 2007. He hadn’t used it and I really wanted it. I’m grateful that he passed it down. I absolutely love music on vinyl. The speakers are a bit fuzzy and I have to shake the wires around a little, but the sound is amazing. Laika is named after the Arcade Fire song; I also have Neon Bible on vinyl. :D

Sterling – my digital camera. He’s quite small; a Kodak C653 and silver in colour. It’s actually a shared camera between my brother and I, so that we can take it around on trips and such. My mum and dad sometimes use it when taking Glass [see below] isn’t necessary or reasonable.

Glass – the family DSLR, a Kodak DX7590. I love Glass like she’s my own! Our family hasn’t been out recently or needed the camera but I’ve been using it a lot. I’m hoping to study photography subjects at university in 2011 so this will really be some good experience.

The Machine – my desktop PC. I left her for last because she was amazing the whole time I’ve had her. She really was a beast, having survived over 500 viruses. She was a fantastic computer when I got her in 2003 – the 21 inch CRT, the 300GB, cordless mouse and keyboard – the whole nine yards. Her time came in early 2012 when I decided to format her disk space and reinstall her OS. She didn’t make it through installation.
