I love my job, not because of the work I do but because of the amazing people I get to work with.

The “I Love” Project

Every year since 2010 I have decided to celebrate my domain's birthday on the 11th October with some kind of project. Last year, it was the 'Love is...' Project and you submitted your definitions of love. This year, you shared what it is that you love.

On the 9th October 2011, this layout was put up with a rotation above the sidebar with chosen submissions. Read more...

Site Name

To be honest I don’t really like the name. It’s hard to spell and you could have gone with something shorter.

Coding and Validation

Your coding has 46 errors and 5 warnings and your CSS has 1 error and 26 warnings.

With your coding, your favicon code is incorrect. It should be:

<link rel="icon" type="image/icon" href="http://hushstar.net/you/favicons/favicon6.png" />

Additionally, you should be crediting Hushstar.net for the favicon.

Since you are validating to XHTML you need to follow some basic rules, which you are forgetting. You need to make sure that all tags are in lowercase. And you also need to place a slash before closing tags on images.

This tutorial should help you fix those errors.

In your CSS font-weight: italic is incorrect. I believe you are looking for font-style: italic.

Browser Compatibility & Usability

Your site is navigable and functions in Firefox, Safari, Opera and Internet Explorer.

The navigation is easy to see. However, I encounter a lot of problems when images are not viewable. You haven’t set a background-color. This means that, because your background is based on an image, when images are turned off, I see a white page and I barely see any text because that is also white. Setting a background colour like dark blue or black, or similar to your background image colour, will allow a coloured background to load in case the image doesn’t.

Your navigation also cannot be spotted when images are working, and in this case, alternate link navigation somewhere in the footer would be useful in this aspect.

It’s a shame but I can’t really see the smilies in your blog because of their light grey colour on your background.

I love the size of the text and how it’s on a large scale. It really fits with the layout and looks good, considering your site isn’t jam-packed.

Layout

I really like this layout. I have noticed that previously, you have used templates or tutorials to assist you. I’m not sure if you’ve used a tutorial for this layout, but I’ll assume that you did the bulk of the design yourself.

This layout looks a lot better than the other layouts you attempted, which seemed to gain a little too much inspiration from other websites and their layouts. This one is simple, but bold. I love the combination of yellow and blue, especially since the blue is rather deep and dark.

The brushes and header image look great, and in actual fact, the yellow in the styling highlights the colour of your hair in the header. I think that the photo of you is a bit fuzzy and you could have chosen one of slightly better quality.

The woodgrain background in the footer is a bit out of place. I see the footer would be neater with a background, instead of just merging into the blue denim background, but I think you should use a solid colour instead, or, just don’t have a background.

Content

In the footer, plentyful should be plentiful. In the disclaimer in the footer, you should state “unless stated otherwise”. You didn’t create the brushes and other resources you used. Also, instead of saying the “coding was created” (since you didn’t invent HTML, technically) you should say something like “everything was coded by me”.

And, lease don’t should be please don’t.

About

On the main page here, ect should be etc. Also, the headings “The Site” and “The Owner” aren’t aligned at the same point.

On “Message from the owner”, there are a few mistakes:
well off freewebs should be well-off Freweebs
heres to should be here’s to.

Since you only have one link button, it might save a bit of space on an extra page if you put it on the main “about” page or somewhere similar.

On the credits page:
Insiration should be Inspiration
For Tellign me Whats What should be For telling me what’s what.

The headings “Layout” and “Other” aren’t aligned at the same point here too – it might be because you’re missing the </ul> to end the first list and <ul> to start the second one.

I’ve noticed that on some of these pages your “back to About section” link is under the title of the page, and sometimes it’s above it. Try to keep this consistent as your pages will look neater.

On the “About Me” page:
lol).I should be lol). I
best friend should be best friends.
The list of ten things would look neater in a list.

The link to the contact form is a 404.

Plog

The footer on this page is a bit messy; I think it needs to be fixed. Also, it might be a good idea to put a date on these pictures!

Content

This section would be better named “visitor”, “resources” or something similar.
by Me should be by me
and If should be and if.

You’ve only got one character, but it’s very cute! I’m sure you drew this yourself. I think it would be a good idea to add more.

The striped bars and user bars aren’t that interesting or unique. I have seen them on other sites in a similar form. I think you could make more interesting and unique content.

I’ve noticed that on some of your <h2> headers, you have the smiley faces. This works well in the footer but when on the page it looks messy and strange.

Portfolio

On this page it would be a good idea to link to the websites and not just type them in.

The last row has five icons unlike the rest (which have four). To make this completely even you could use a table. I know this is just a portfolio to display your progress but just a note – when creating visitor content try and expand the tutorials you’ve used on my site and Fuzzable to create something more unique.

A title on this section, such as “icons”, would be useful, especially later on when you include other graphics.

Originality & Creativity

Your website is generally quite original. However I think that your visitor content can be improved. It could be more interesting, and you could add more content that is less generic.

Organisation & Errors

Fairly well organised. You could fix a few errors here and there, which I have mentioned throughout this review.

Overall Comment

I think you have great layouts and a good sense of design but I have noticed you use other people’s ideas. I think this layout is the best you’ve made so far, and the most unique. If you keep this up you’ll have an even better site.

Your visitor content could be better. I think you need to work on something more unique and interesting. Perhaps some premade layouts would be a nice addition to your site.

Aww, thanks Georgie.

I need to spend more time on my coding, to be honest in only spend the time making the css and headers and footers ect instead of checking if its valid. Which is why in some places it looks messy.

Yeah, I am trying to make a few premade layouts. I think since I love making layouts for myself (so the layout changes every other day) so maybe that will cure my habit /clap

Thanks, again. I am going to buy a domain soon, I am now thinking about having Ellefant instead of Elliesaur. I just want to have my name in it :)
