The “I Love” Project

Every year since 2010 I celebrate my domain's birthday on the 11th October with some kind of project. In 2010, it was the 'Love is...' Project and you submitted your definitions of love. In 2011, you shared what it is that you love.

On the 9th October 2011, this design was released with a rotation above the sidebar with chosen submissions. Read more...

Site Name

I love the name; it suits you, as I recall seeing somewhere on one of your websites. I’m a little thrown by the URL change though, as the new name contains a dash. I’m not a fan of dashes in URLs – they look appealing sometimes but for accessibility/easy typing and all that jazz, I just don’t. But I guess it’ll just take me a bit of time to get used to from your old URL with a different extension.

I came across a website called Tinted Halo, which you may have heard of – it caused me a little confusion since the names were quite similar.

Coding and Validation

According to the HTML validator your coding has 49 errors. They’re just really minor mistakes. You’re forgetting slashes in some tags, some alt attributes in images, and you have put a blockquote within a p (paragraph).

Your doctype is XHTML 1.0 Strict but you don’t seem to be following it as you have used deprecated tags like <center>.

Your CSS is valid in CSS3. There are a few warnings but these aren’t a major issue – some elements just clash but you haven’t used them together so it’s fine.

Browser Compatibility & Usability

Your website is looking consistent in Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer, Firefox and Google Chrome. It actually looks quite nice in Chrome since it allows for more space within the browser itself.

Now I know there’s problems viewing the navigation of your website in some small screen resolutions but I really do appreciate that you’ve taken the time to pop extra links/alternate navigation at the bottom of your layout for those unfortunate. I came across a website the other day that you might find useful for screen resolution testing at MarkHorrell.com.

I think the text is a little bit hard to read in some places because of the colour. It’s just a bit on the light side.

Layout

I like the style of layout because it’s really different to what you normally do, and having a main image on the right hand side of the screen is rarely done. I like how the image fades off to the left, but looking at the image itself, I can see that it doesn’t fade on the top or bottom. If someone viewed your website on a very large screen, they would see the edge of your layout cut off (I believe it’s the bottom edge) and it might look a little odd when you have managed to fade the left of the image already. Just something to keep in mind.

I love the styling and the colours in the CSS – plum, blue and green of the right shades looks terrific together. I also like the combination of fonts used in <h1>.

While I do like the idea of alternate navigation for those who cannot see the navigation to the left… I really wasn’t so keen on that navigation in the first place. I felt that it would be neater if it was a little bit smaller, or if the main text was a larger size to balance it out. At the moment that text is on the small side of things.

Content

Fanlistings

I like the organisation of links here, but I think they should differ from the navigation in the footer. Perhaps make them the colour of your blockquotes? Since these are sort of the main focus of the page, the links should stand out more.

There’s not too much I can say about this section. It’s well organised, and I like the way your fanlistings are set out.

By now I have noticed that your h1s all have the same text in this section – “My heart’s a battle ground…” I think you could change this a bit especially on the wishlist page, because having multiple headings with that same tagline looks a little odd.

On your KIM list, it might be an idea to add select to your CSS along with textarea, input so that dropdown menus will have the same styling on your forms as the text boxes.

Domain

As you might know “how I roll”, this section would be better named “website” since not many people are familiar with the term “domain”.

I don’t know if it was intended, but on the link back page, your taglines are backwards (“I need more affection than you know” backwards).

Affiliates

This section is fine.

Credits (separate section)

I don’t really like the idea of crediting people just with an “x”. I really like that you’ve made a separate section to credit everyone, but it would look a hell of a lot neater if you linked back using buttons, or text links with the name of the website. However, I do congratulate you for the unique idea and the website is well organised otherwise.

Originality & Creativity

Not too much to say here. I’m not familiar with Kingdom Hearts but I like the simplicity in your layout; it’s balanced out with some rather creative CSS. I think you’ve been rather daring in this layout and stepped outside the square.

Organisation & Errors

Very well organised. I had no problems here. I could spot any errors apart from the ones in your coding but they can be fixed.

Your fanlisting collective is just like how all fanlisting collectives should be – well taken care of and well organised!

Overall Comment

Great job. You’ve worked hard on this website and I can tell that the styling needed extra attention. Your CSS, as I’ve seen from your other websites and from your fanlistings, is detailed and very well done.

I think the only improvement you could make is to the layout – in regards to size and structure and navigation placement – it all could be better. Your credits should really also not use “x” as anchor text. However, keep up the great work!

Thanks for reviewing me again, Georgina! Since all of the problems (although minor), I expected to get a 3/5 or a 4/5 like So Vamped did. I’m super happy to get a 4.5/5 cookies! 8D

I double checked all of my grammar…and I never thought twice of checking my stuff for valid CSS and HTML. xD I’ll be sure to fix those problems. Thanks for reminding me to do so. –;

And the suggestion to change the X’s on the credits page I’ll definitely consider. I did the X’s because the names of the sites or what I used just made the lists terribly long. But I might try to find something better than the X’s! <3

I will be sure to reread this and try any suggestions! Sorry about the domain change. I personally don't like .me and I wasn't going to pay $22 next year for something I didn't like. (I only bought it because it was $8.88 at the time.) I don't like dashes either, but hey, it's not that much of an eye sore and tiltedhalo was already taken! :P

Thank you for the review. <33

Sorry to but ( <—dont know which "but" to use) in, but for the x idea, if the names are too long, maybe putting a site button of theirs? But x's are a bit rude. Good luck with your site Manda, and keep up the amazing reviews Georgina!
