The “I Love” Project

Every year since 2010 I celebrate my domain's birthday on the 11th October with some kind of project. In 2010, it was the 'Love is...' Project and you submitted your definitions of love. In 2011, you shared what it is that you love.

On the 9th October 2011, this design was released with a rotation above the sidebar with chosen submissions. Read more...

Site Name

Though I’m not a huge fan of hyphens, I like the name and it sounds pretty.

Coding and Validation

According to the HTML validator you have 8 errors and 2 warnings.

You’re missing your character encoding which needs to go in the <head> section. The most common character encoding is UTF-8:

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8">

Also bear in mind that all images should have an alt attribute. This alternate text is displayed for people who cannot view images and will view the text in place of images.

Your CSS has an error. Part of your CSS reads *html, where the asterisk is not needed. If you need to comment CSS code, I am sure you are aware that it should be just like the beginning of your code and should be done like this:

/*  GENERAL */

Browser Compatibility & Usability

Your website is looking consistent in Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

I think the bottom section of the layout being static at the bottom of the screen is a nice idea, and keeps the flow of the layout. I think that because of the rather wide width of the layout, you should increase the line-height of the text so that it balances out vertically as well. There isn’t a lot on the homepage in terms of content, so I would suggest doing this so that the page doesn’t look too “cramped”.

Layout

I actually really love the splashes of colour that pop out to me when I visit your site. The favicon you have is also very eye-catching and suits your site name. I like that you’ve chosen to use many colours but they are of the same tone and brightness, so they don’t clash at all. On the white background, they don’t stand out too much but just enough.

I like the feature of the leaves at the top of the layout as it draws attention to the heading. On other pages apart from the home page, I like the way the text wraps around this section of the layout.

While I do like the interest that the orange “F” adds to the layout, I feel that it could have bee done in a different font, or the rest of the site name in a different font to match a bit more. A little bit of padding between the site name and the teal horizontal line would make the top section of the layout seem less squished, and balance out with the green leaves.

I do like the effect of the navigation but make sure that you specify alt attributes for these images. If a viewer had images turned off or disabled, there is a possibility that they could not see your navigation.

Layouts

All these layouts look very nice. They’re not my style but I think you’ve done a great job on them. They all seem to work across different browsers, and the pages are very organised. The names for the layouts are very suitable and the patterns used in them are very nice as well.

I like how the names on the layouts can be edited, and that you’ve allowed users to have the ability to change that. Most layouts I see have the graphic made such that it displays large text, but I like that this is customisable to that point.

In particular I really like Castle in the Sky because of its unique structure.

The only problem I have with your layouts is that two of them use iframes when you could use divs, simply by setting a height onto the frame. There isn’t much of a difference, and since iframes have disadvantages including being inaccessible and not very user-friendly, it might be a better option.

Linkage

This page is organised so well; I’m impressed. There could be a bit more padding around the affiliate images, though.

Contact

The questions seem a bit squished – perhaps an extra line break between each question would balance the page out and make the questions stand out, making it easier to read.

Originality & Creativity

I am pleased to see that you’ve credited all possible resources on your links page. I like that your work isn’t completely focused on the anime images, but you have put in a lot of effort in the styling and colours of your layouts, keeping a good balance.

I tend to like soft and gentle colours, so your layouts do catch my attention. Well done.

Organisation & Errors

There were barely any errors spotted and I think your website is very organised. There were no problems here.

Overall Comment

I don’t have much to say about your website; you’ve put in a lot of work in your layouts and they look terrific. I am sure you will add more in time that are of the same excellent quality.

Your website is small and very organised and it was a pleasure to review. I would only suggest converting those layouts to div layers; other than that, keep up the awesome work.
